Iraq to Repatriate More Families from Syria's Al-Hol Camp

Iraq is set to repatriate between 150 and 160 families from the al-Hol camp in northeastern Syria's Hasakah province in the coming days, according to the country's Ministry of Migration and Displacement.

Ali Abbas, spokesperson for the ministry, confirmed on Saturday, September 7, 2024, that preparations for the return of these Iraqi citizens are underway, though the exact date for their repatriation has yet to be finalized.

Despite this upcoming return, Abbas noted that approximately 18,000 Iraqis remain in al-Hol. To date, between 4,500 and 5,000 families have been brought back to Iraq.

Al-Hol camp, located in the Rojava region of Syria, is under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and primarily houses women and children associated with ISIS fighters. The camp has long been a focal point of concern due to its population, which includes many relatives of ISIS combatants.

Iraqi families repatriated from al-Hol are relocated to the Jada camp in Nineveh province, where they undergo rehabilitation before being reintegrated into their original communities across Iraq.

The United Nations estimates that approximately 42,000 people from various countries remain in al-Hol, making it the largest camp housing relatives of ISIS fighters.
