Turkish Drone Bombs Village in Northern Sulaymaniyah Amid Ongoing PKK Conflict
A suspected Turkish military drone carried out a heavy bombardment on the village of Shinkey in the Sharbazher area of northern Sulaymaniyah province on Monday morning, according to local sources. The attack is part of an escalating campaign against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has a base near the village.
A resident of Shinkey, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed deep concern over the increasing dangers posed by the ongoing conflict. "The villages in the Mawat and Sharbazher districts are bombed from time to time because of the presence of PKK fighters. This is a dangerous escalation because the residents are never sure of their safety. If the bombings don’t kill us, they will destroy our fields and gardens," the villager told BasNews.
The presence of PKK fighters in the region has become a significant issue for the local population. "The PKK fighters have created a significant problem for all the villagers of Sharbazher. They have become a major disaster for us because the fighters openly mingle with the villagers and enter the villages every day. Although we have repeatedly asked the PKK fighters through the relevant authorities to withdraw from the areas and avoid approaching the villages and civilians, the fighters continue to enter the villages and set up temporary bases," the resident added.
The Turkish military has intensified its operations in the Kurdistan Region, targeting PKK positions with drone strikes and other military actions. These operations have led to the deaths of several senior PKK members and the evacuation of hundreds of villages, further worsening the humanitarian situation in the region.
The PKK, labeled a "terrorist organization" by Turkey, has been engaged in a violent struggle with the Turkish state for over three decades. The conflict, centered around the Kurdish issue, has claimed more than 40,000 lives on both sides. Despite Turkey's stated goal of dismantling the PKK's presence in the region, the ongoing violence continues to put civilian lives at risk, creating a persistent atmosphere of fear and instability.
