Iraqi Ministry of Health Collaborates with WHO on Global Preparedness Against Mpox Virus
The Iraqi Ministry of Health held a significant meeting with the World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday, focusing on global health preparedness against the Mpox virus, commonly known as monkeypox. The meeting underscored the importance of developing a comprehensive precautionary plan to prevent the virus from entering Iraq.
The meeting, conducted under the guidance of Minister of Health Saleh Mehdi al-Hasnawi, was led by Riyadh Abdul Amir al-Halfi, Director of the Public Health Department. Key WHO representatives and department heads were also in attendance.
Discussions centered around the global status of the Mpox virus, particularly following the WHO’s reports on its spread across African nations and other regions. Participants reviewed the virus's transmission methods and the protocols for diagnosing the disease, emphasizing the need for vigilant monitoring and preparedness.
A crucial outcome of the meeting was the follow-up on Iraq's precautionary plan. This plan includes stringent measures at border crossings, where medical teams are directed to thoroughly examine foreign arrivals to prevent the virus's potential entry.
The Ministry of Health also highlighted the importance of intensifying efforts across various health departments in Baghdad and other governorates. Part of these efforts involves launching media campaigns, in collaboration with various outlets, to raise public awareness about Mpox and educate citizens on preventive measures.
As of now, Iraq has not recorded any cases of the Mpox virus. The ministry remains committed to safeguarding public health through these proactive measures.
