Conflict Between PKK and Turkey Turns Kurdish Region into Military Zone

In a recent interview with Kurdistan 24, Halgurd Sheikh Najib, supervisor of the Soran Administration, highlighted the severe impact of ongoing hostilities between the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and Turkey on civilians in the region, transforming it into a military zone.

Najib emphasized the detrimental effects of the conflict on local communities, stating, "The PKK's activities in the Kurdistan Region have led to the evacuation of numerous villages, severely affecting our area."

He underscored that the primary victims of this conflict are the people of the region, noting the complexities it poses to the Kurdistan Regional Government. Efforts have been underway to address these issues, he added, reflecting on the extensive challenges faced in recent years.

Najib also pointed out the escalation of Turkish military presence in Kurdish border areas due to PKK activities, particularly in regions like Bradost and Balakayety. These areas, known for tourism, commerce, and agriculture, have recently witnessed intensified fighting, resulting in significant damage.

The PKK, designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union, operates within the Kurdistan Region, where Iraqi federal authority is limited.

Recent weeks have seen increased Turkish military actions and airstrikes targeting PKK positions within Kurdish borders. The conflict has prompted the Iraqi federal government to seek dialogue with Turkey to address the PKK issue and mitigate tensions between Baghdad and Ankara.
