President Masoud Barzani to Visit Baghdad for First Time in Six Years, Hold Key Meetings with Iraqi Officials

President Masoud Barzani, leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), is set to visit Baghdad on Wednesday, marking his first visit to the Iraqi capital in six years. Barzani's visit will include meetings with senior Iraqi officials and pro-Iran Coordination Framework parties.

"President Masoud Barzani’s visit is very important. He will attend the Coordination Framework meeting at the house of Mr. Ammar al-Hakim as a high-level guest," said Mohammed Hussam Husseini, head of relations and politburo member of Iraq’s National Wisdom Movement, which is part of the Coordination Framework, in an interview with Rudaw.

Barzani is also scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani and other senior officials to discuss several pressing issues, including Erbil-Baghdad relations. According to Husseini, the discussions will aim to "lay a solid foundation for the future of Iraq."

An anonymous source informed Rudaw that Barzani’s meetings are intended to find appropriate solutions to longstanding issues between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

In addition to his meeting with al-Sudani, Barzani will engage with key political figures such as Hadi al-Amiri, head of the Fatih Alliance; Nouri al-Maliki, former premier and leader of the State of Law Coalition; and Haider al-Abadi, former premier and leader of the Victory Party, among others.

"Holding a personality like Mr. Masoud Barzani will give more importance to the meeting and Iraq’s internal affairs, and a number of foreign and regional issues will be discussed," added Husseini.

Barzani's last visit to Baghdad was in November 2018, where he was welcomed by then-Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament Mohammed al-Halbousi, along with Amiri and several ministers and officials at Baghdad International Airport.

This visit is anticipated to play a crucial role in addressing the challenges and enhancing cooperation between the federal government and the KRG.
