U.S. Reaffirms Support for UN Mission in Iraq Amid Calls for Conclusion by 2025

In the latest developments regarding the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), the United States Government has reiterated its strong backing for the mission, emphasizing its vital humanitarian and political contributions to Iraq. This reaffirmation follows Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani's recent formal request for the conclusion of UNAMI's mandate by the end of 2025.
During a daily press conference, U.S. State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel emphasized the pivotal role UNAMI has played in fostering regional stability and addressing internal challenges within Iraq. Patel highlighted that UNAMI's efforts have extended beyond electoral assistance to encompass crucial functions such as facilitating regional dialogues, ensuring equitable distribution of humanitarian aid, and supporting the voluntary return of displaced Iraqis.
"The mandate established in 2003 has garnered strong support from the U.S.," stated Patel, underscoring the enduring commitment to Iraq's progress through UNAMI's continued presence.
The call for the conclusion of UNAMI's mandate was formalized by Prime Minister Sudani in a letter addressed to the United Nations Security Council last week. Sudani highlighted the progress achieved by Iraqi federal governments and asserted that Iraq no longer requires the UN's political mission beyond 2025.
Responding to this request, U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Alina Romanowski met with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein in Baghdad on Monday to discuss the implications of Prime Minister Sudani's letter. The meeting delved into the potential role of UNAMI in overseeing elections in the Kurdistan region, addressing challenges, and charting a path forward should the elections proceed.
The U.S. reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the Government of Iraq and fellow Security Council members to ensure a responsible and structured conclusion to UNAMI's mission that comprehensively addresses the needs of the Iraqi people.
The discussions underscore the evolving dynamics surrounding UNAMI's presence in Iraq and highlight the intricate diplomatic efforts aimed at fostering stability and progress in the region amidst changing political landscapes.
