Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Begins Gas Exports from Khor Mor Field

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Electricity announced today that the Khor Mor gas field has commenced exporting natural gas to power plants, marking a crucial development in the region's energy sector.

According to the Ministry, on Tuesday evening, the Khor Mor gas field began supplying gas to power plants, with approximately 270 million cubic feet delivered out of the required 520 million cubic feet for electricity generation. This represents half of the plants' capacity.

Over the next 24 hours, three major power plants located in Erbil, Sulaimani, and Bazyan are expected to become operational, further enhancing the region's electricity supply.

The resumption of gas production at the Khor Mor field follows recent security measures implemented by the Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government, aimed at fortifying defenses at the site. Dana Gas, the operator of the field, in partnership with Crescent Petroleum, has confirmed the restart of production activities.

This announcement comes after a drone attack on April 26 targeted the Khor Mor gas field, resulting in the tragic loss of four Yemeni workers. The field, estimated to hold over 7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves, plays a pivotal role in the region's energy infrastructure.

Dana Gas, a key player in the energy sector based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), had previously reported a daily gas production of 552 million cubic feet from the Khor Mor field. The company aims to boost production by 55 percent in the coming period.

In addition to Khor Mor, Kurdistan hosts several other gas fields operated by various oil companies, including Genel Energy's Bina Bawi gas field and Gulf Keystone Petroleum's Chemchemal gas field. The region also oversees smaller fields such as Piramagrun, managed directly by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

The resumption of gas exports from Khor Mor is expected to bolster the energy sector in Kurdistan, supporting economic growth and ensuring a more reliable power supply to the population. This development signifies a significant step forward in the region's efforts to enhance its energy self-sufficiency and strengthen its infrastructure amidst ongoing challenges.
