President Nechirvan Barzani: We must establish a mechanism to find solutions with Baghdad

During his visit to Baghdad, President Nechirvan Barzani emphasized the importance of establishing a regular mechanism for finding solution with Baghdad. In his remarks to the media, he provided insights into his discussions and meetings in the Iraqi capital.

In response to a question about his visit, President Nechirvan Barzani said:

“During our recent visit to Baghdad, we engaged in fruitful meetings and discussions with the Prime Minister and the State Administration Coalition regarding the future of the relationship between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad. At the meetings I endeavored to establish a mechanism to hold those types of meetings regularly between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad to address current challenges collectively. As you are aware, the salary matter holds significant importance for the Kurdistan Regional Government. The recent agreement between the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region and Prime Minister Sudani marks a positive beginning, and we are optimistic about its continuation. Our discussions also encompassed the oil issue, and it is our firm belief that resuming oil exports is crucial for both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The detrimental impact (from halting export of oil) on the Iraqi budget has already amounted to over seven billion dollars. While this matter has been addressed, the Kurdistan Regional Government wishes to send more teams to hold more extensive discussions in Baghdad. We remain hopeful of a conclusive resolution.”

In response to a question about holding the Kurdistan parliamentary elections on time, the President said:

“As the President of the Kurdistan Region, I have determined the date for the upcoming election and as of now, there have been no alterations to that schedule. Certainly this is a political issue, and it is essential for all political parties to engage in discussions about it, ultimately we must overcome this matter through mutual understanding.”
