Kurdish Judge Resigns from Iraq's Supreme Federal Court in Protest of Recent Ruling on Kurdistan Region

In a significant act of protest, Abdulrahman Sleman, a Kurdish judge on Iraq's Supreme Federal Court, announced his resignation on Monday. The decision comes in the wake of the court's recent ruling which abolished quota seats in the Kurdistan parliament and subjected the salaries of Kurdistan's civil servants to direct payment from Baghdad.

Speaking at a news conference held by Kurdistan Region's Judicial Council, Sleman expressed his deep discontent with the court's ruling, describing it as a move towards centralization and a blatant violation of the constitutional rights of the Kurdistan Region.

Highlighting his role as a representative of the Kurdistan Region within the judiciary, Sleman lamented his inability to defend or safeguard the rights of the Region's people in the face of such rulings.

The controversial ruling, issued by Iraq's top court in late February of this year, declared the allocation of quota seats for ethnic and religious components in the Kurdistan parliament as unconstitutional. Additionally, it mandated that the salaries of civil servants in the Kurdistan Region be directly administered by the federal government in Baghdad.

Sleman's resignation underscores the growing tensions between the Kurdistan Region and the central government of Iraq, as well as the increasing challenges to the autonomy and rights of the Kurdistan Region within the Iraqi state.
