KRG Council of Ministers to Address Provincial Council Issues Amid Federal Supreme Court Ruling
In a pivotal move aimed at addressing provincial council concerns, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Council of Ministers is scheduled to convene this Wednesday, with Prime Minister Masrour Barzani presiding over the session in Erbil. Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani will also be in attendance, as per an official statement released by the KRG.
The focal point of the gathering, proposed by Prime Minister Barzani himself, will be to deliberate on the matter of provincial councils. This discussion comes in the wake of the Federal Supreme Court's ruling on September 24, 2023. The ruling, which temporarily suspended Law No. (2) of 2019, pertains to amendments made to the Provincial Law of 2009.
It's imperative to note that the Federal Supreme Court stands as the apex judicial authority within Iraq, established by ministerial law in 2005. The court's significance was further underscored during the Iraqi parliament's 45th regular session of the first legislative term for the third year of its fourth election, held on March 18, 2021. During this session, the parliament announced the inaugural amendment to Law No. 30 of 2005, reconfiguring the Federal Supreme Court's composition.
With regional and federal dynamics at play, the KRG's deliberations hold substantial weight in navigating the complexities surrounding provincial governance. As the KRG Council of Ministers assembles, all eyes are on the outcomes of this crucial session, poised to shape the trajectory of provincial governance in the Kurdistan region.
