Prime Minister Masrour Barzani Pays Tribute to Martyrs on 20th Anniversary of February 1st Tragedy in Erbil

In a solemn ceremony held today, Thursday, February 1, 2024, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, Masrour Barzani, paid tribute to the fallen heroes during the annual commemoration of the martyrs of February 1 in the city of Erbil.

Marking the twentieth anniversary of the tragic events that unfolded on February 1, 2004, the Prime Minister laid a wreath of flowers at the memorial monument dedicated to the victims of the February 1 massacre. The poignant ceremony took place at Martyr Sami Abdul Rahman Park in Erbil, where the community gathered to honor and remember those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks.

On that fateful day in 2004, during the morning of Eid al-Adha, more than 100 individuals were tragically martyred, and hundreds sustained injuries as a result of two coordinated bombings. The attacks specifically targeted the second branch of the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the third headquarters of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan in Erbil.

Masrour Barzani, deeply moved by the occasion, expressed his condolences and solidarity with the families of the victims. The ceremony served as a poignant reminder of the resilience of the Kurdish people in the face of adversity and the ongoing efforts to preserve the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the region.

The commemorative event underscored the importance of unity and remembrance as the community came together to reflect on the impact of the tragic events that unfolded two decades ago, reaffirming their commitment to building a resilient and peaceful future for the Kurdistan Region.
