Deadly Drone Attack Targets US Military Base Near Jordan-Syria Border

In a tragic turn of events, three US troops have lost their lives, and 25 others have been wounded in a drone attack on a military base near the Jordan-Syria border. The Pentagon officials have confirmed the strike, which occurred at a base in northeast Jordan, further escalating tensions in the already volatile Middle East region.

The victims of the attack have not been officially identified, and the entity responsible for the drone strike remains undisclosed. US Central Command has confirmed the casualties, emphasizing that the incident impacted a base in northeast Jordan.

This marks a significant development as it is the first time since the onset of the Gaza war that US troops have been killed by enemy fire in the Middle East. Officials suggest that the drone, fired by Iran-backed militants, appeared to originate from Syria.

In response to the attack, President Joe Biden has pledged to hold those responsible accountable. Despite ongoing investigations to gather facts surrounding the incident, the President stated, "We know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq."

This recent attack signals a notable escalation in the ongoing hostilities, with US forces targeted over 150 times since mid-October by Iran-backed militias opposing Israel's conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

It is important to note that the US has approximately 2,500 troops deployed in the region. While they officially concluded their combat mission against the Islamic State in December 2021, the remaining personnel in Iraq and Syria serve in an advisory capacity to Iraqi and Kurdish security forces. The US military re-entered Iraq in 2014 to continue anti-Islamic State (IS) operations following a complete withdrawal in 2011. The situation remains fluid, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
