Drone Strike Targets Iranian-Backed Militia Center in Baghdad

A logistic center belonging to the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), specifically the Iranian-backed militia force Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba, was hit by a drone strike in central Baghdad today, resulting in casualties and escalating tensions in the region.

According to information obtained by Kurdistan24, two members of the militia forces have been confirmed dead, identified as "senior leaders." The Telegram channel linked to the militias reported the strike, naming Abu Taqwa Al-Saeedi as the commander. Al-Saeedi is described as the deputy commander of the PMF's Baghdad Belt Operations.

Eyewitnesses reported at least two explosions in eastern Baghdad, where the strike occurred. The strike targeted a key facility of the Iranian-backed militia, causing significant damage and raising concerns about the ongoing hostilities in the region.

The militias have accused the United States of carrying out the drone strike, linking it to a previous attack on another militia base by U.S. troops last month. In that incident, a drone strike targeted American forces in Erbil, resulting in three servicemen being wounded.

This latest development comes just a day after PMF forces commemorated the fourth anniversary of the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani and his Iraqi comrade in a U.S. strike in Baghdad. The anniversary events further heightened tensions in the area.

Iranian-backed militias have reportedly increased drone strikes on U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria, particularly following the eruption of the Gaza war. Pentagon officials claim that more than 100 such attacks have taken place since then, creating a volatile situation in the region.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation, and the implications of this latest strike on regional stability remain uncertain. As tensions escalate, there are growing concerns about the potential for further retaliation and the impact on diplomatic efforts to ease hostilities in the region.
