Iraqi Prime Minister Orders Probe into Drone Attack on Peshmerga Base, Urges Unified Response

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani has launched a comprehensive investigation into a recent drone attack on a Peshmerga base in Pirmam, calling for cooperation between Kurdish and Iraqi security agencies to uncover the motives behind the strike. As the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, Sudani has directed security agencies to collaborate in identifying the perpetrators and assessing potential threats to national sovereignty and security.

The incident unfolded on Saturday night, when two explosive-laden drones targeted a Peshmerga base between Erbil city and Pirmam district. While there were no reported casualties, the complex housing the forces suffered material damage, according to Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Spokesperson Peshwa Hawramani.

Hawramani condemned the attack, branding it as "war-mongering and dangerous," linking it to an outlaw group collaborating with traitors. He accused these groups of being funded and armed by the federal government, alleging their involvement in transporting weapons, rockets, and drones for terrorist activities against government and military institutions.

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani strongly denounced the drone attack and, in a statement released today, urged Prime Minister Sudani to take immediate action against the outlaw groups responsible. Barzani emphasized that any attack on the Kurdistan Region should be considered an attack on all of Iraq, urging the federal government to respond with appropriate measures.

"I'm deeply alarmed by last night's terrorist attack on a Peshmerga base northeast of Erbil. I condemn the outlaws and their collaborators in the strongest terms possible. We know well the issues at play here and the outlaws behind them, and have a right to defend our people," stated PM Barzani.

Highlighting the risk of renewed conflict, Barzani cautioned against inaction, stating that it would embolden the outlaws who utilize state resources to destabilize the Kurdistan Region. He urged Prime Minister Sudani to take practical measures to stop and sanction the groups, emphasizing the need for swift and decisive action to maintain regional stability and security.

The situation is evolving, and both leaders are expected to address the nation in the coming days as the investigation progresses.
