Kurdish Leader Barzani Reaffirms Support for Ethnic and Religious Representation in Kurdistan Ahead of Parliamentary Elections

President Masoud Barzani, the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), reiterated his commitment to ensuring fair representation for ethnic and religious components in the Kurdistan Region, emphasizing their right to determine their future autonomously.

In a statement released on Sunday, President Barzani underscored the importance of allowing ethnic and religious communities in the Kurdistan Region to shape their destiny without external imposition. He stated that no voting or representation formula should be forced upon these components against their will, emphasizing the need to respect their autonomy and decision-making processes.

Barzani emphasized that the diverse ethnic and religious groups form an integral part of the social fabric of the Kurdistan Region. He urged that their rights and entitlements should not be compromised for the sake of political interests, highlighting the significance of an inclusive political landscape that respects the diversity within the region.

To ensure such inclusivity, the Kurdistan parliament has allocated 11 quota seats for ethnic and religious components residing in the region. These seats aim to provide a platform for these communities to be represented effectively, fostering an inclusive legislature that echoes the voices of all, irrespective of their ethnic or religious backgrounds.

As the Kurdistan Region gears up for overdue parliamentary elections scheduled for February of the following year, with a total of 111 seats up for grabs, the commitment to fair representation and inclusivity stands at the forefront of political discourse. The 11 seats allocated for ethnic and religious components play a crucial role in fostering a diverse and representative government, reflecting the Kurdistan Region's commitment to democratic values and respect for its diverse population.
