Kurdistan Region Provides Refuge for Nearly 930,000 Displaced Individuals and Refugees, Ensuring Ongoing Support

Kurdistan Region, Iraq - The Joint Crisis Coordination Center (JCC) of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has reported that the Kurdistan Region continues to serve as a safe haven for a substantial number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees, with a staggering 928,649 individuals seeking shelter as of Friday. These figures underline the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the KRG's dedication to addressing the needs of those affected.

According to the JCC, the breakdown of the displaced population includes 664,224 IDPs, 246,810 Syrian refugees, 7,860 Turkish refugees, 8,241 Iranian refugees, 615 Palestinian refugees, and 899 refugees from various other countries. While 30% of these individuals reside in designated camps, the remaining 70% have settled within host communities throughout the region.

Geographically, the distribution of the displaced population reveals that 41% currently reside in Erbil, 40% in Duhok, and 19% in Sulaymaniyah, reflecting the broad impact of the crisis across the Kurdistan Region.

In efforts to address the crisis and support the affected populations, Srwa Rasul was recently appointed as the Director General of the KRG's Joint Crisis Coordination Center (JCC) on May 8. This appointment underscores the KRG's commitment to actively managing and responding to the ongoing challenges faced by the displaced individuals and refugees.

Reber Ahmed, the KRG's Minister of Interior, has reiterated the government's unwavering commitment to facilitating the voluntary return of all displaced populations and safeguarding the rights and protection of vulnerable individuals. Minister Ahmed emphasized that no camps will be closed as long as there are people in need, further emphasizing the KRG's dedication to supporting those affected by the crisis.

The Kurdistan Region's provision of refuge for nearly 930,000 displaced individuals and refugees highlights the region's crucial role in responding to the humanitarian crisis. With ongoing support from the KRG, led by the newly appointed Director General of the JCC, Srwa Rasul, and the steadfast commitment of Minister Reber Ahmed, the region continues to work tirelessly to address the needs of those affected and ensure their safety and well-being.
