Iraqi Kurdistan's Air Quality Better Than Rest of Iraq, Says Green Iraq Observatory
The "Green Iraq" Observatory, which focuses on the environment and climate, confirmed that Erbil and the rest of the cities in the Kurdistan Region have better air quality than other Iraqi provinces, including Baghdad, which is related to people's health.
In a statement on its website, the observatory stated that "the digital information department of the observatory, through the IQAir platform specialized in protecting air from airborne pollutants, found that Erbil and the rest of the cities in Kurdistan have advanced ranks compared to the rest of the cities in Iraq, including the capital, Baghdad."
The observatory's statement added that "Erbil came in first place in Iraq by ranking 72, and Baghdad ranked 80", indicating that "the site's classification for these numbers comes within the healthy air, meaning between healthy and dangerous air, and its impact on people's public health."
The statement also pointed out that "the ranking did not show the number of Basra province, which is known to be the most polluted city due to the oil fuels extracted from wells and the effects of wars."
The air quality index depends on measuring fine solid or liquid particles suspended in the air, which can be natural or human-made sources due to their daily activities, as well as calculating the presence of other components in the air such as ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and carbon monoxide (CO).
This news report highlights how Erbil and other cities in Kurdistan are leading the way in air quality in Iraq, which is crucial for the health and well-being of citizens. The report also sheds light on the efforts of the "Green Iraq" Observatory to monitor and raise awareness about environmental issues in the country.
