German Foreign Minister expresses gratitude for Kurdistan Region's hospitality and support for human rights
On Tuesday, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) announced that Annalena Baerbock, the Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany, had sent a letter to Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani expressing her gratitude for the warm and friendly welcome she received during her visit to the region on March 7-10. Baerbock also reaffirmed Germany's continued support for the Kurdistan Region.
In her letter, Baerbock commended the Kurdistan Region's commitment to protecting human rights, particularly those of women and journalists, and expressed her appreciation for Barzani's willingness to address the impacts of climate change. She also thanked the Kurdistan Region for hosting the largest number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Iraq since 2014 and for continuing to protect them.
Furthermore, Baerbock urged Barzani to continue working on providing social security for Yazidis, Christians, and other minorities, both within the Kurdistan Region and in his dialogues with Baghdad. She expressed her hope that Erbil-Baghdad relations would be built on a new and reliable foundation so that Iraq's natural resources could be used for the welfare of its people.
Germany has been part of the international coalition against ISIS and has assisted both Erbil and Baghdad in defeating the terror group that had controlled a third of the country.
