Iraq asks Turkey to increase water flow along Euphrates
The Iraqi Water Ministry has requested that Turkey increase the amount of water being released into the Euphrates River after a successful visit by the Iraqi Prime Minister resulted in Turkey doubling the water flow in the Tigris River.
The Water Ministry has called for discussions to take place in order to establish a firm foundation for Iraq's share of water from the Euphrates River.
The levels of both the Tigris and Euphrates rivers have significantly decreased in recent years, with a report from the Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources warning that without urgent action, both rivers will be dry by 2040.
Iraq is the fifth-most vulnerable nation in the world to climate change, and water scarcity is a significant issue.
