Iranian MP Says Baghdad Owes Tehran Over $ One Billion as Part of Iraq-Iran War Reparations
ERBIL - A member of the Iranian Reformists political faction in country's parliament said on Thursday that Iraq owes over $1 billion to Iran in relation to the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s reparations.

"The government of Iraq, according to Article 6 of Resolution 598 [of the UN], owes USD 1.1 trillion as compensation for direct damages," Mahmoud Sadeghi, a member of the Majlis and representative of Tehran, wrote on Twitter, as cited by Kurdistan 24.

The remarks were made after Iraqi PM Haider al-Abadi said, earlier the week on Tuesday, that Baghdad would not agree with the US's sanctions against Iran but will abide by them in order to protect its interests.

"Now, however, the Iraqi Prime Minister, instead of compensations, accepts tyrannical sanctions on the people of Iran," Sadeghi added.
