ERBIL - Hundreds of protesters gathered on Sunday evening at the border gate between Iraq and Kuwait, at Safwan border crossing near Basra, threatening to block the border, a report said.

According to RT news agency, citing one of the protest organizers, Ahmed Asadi, the demonstrators had planned to continue the gathering at the main gate at night, but are afraid of the security forces to disperse them.

The protesters demanded better public services and job opportunities for the youths of the city in both the public and private sectors, according to the report.

Thousands of people in southern provinces of Iraq have been taking into the streets to protest the "inefficient" public services and high rate of unemployment.

Iraqi reports said that hundreds of people have been killed or wounded so far.
