Kurdish election results to be announced as they are counted: commission
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Official results of the Kurdistan parliament elections, scheduled for September 30, will be announced as they are counted to avoid any possible interference, the Region’s High Independent Referendum and Electoral Commission announced Monday.

Commission spokesperson Sherwan Zrar said the aim is to stop any repeat of the widespread allegations of fraud which followed Iraq’s parliamentary election on May 12.

The commission has previously said it will not use electronic voting machines in polling stations after parties claimed the devices had been tampered with, skewing May’s results.

Jutyar Adil, a member of the commission, has criticized Kurdish political parties for failing to submit their lists of candidates by the stated deadline. Two Turkmen parties have so far submitted their candidates.

Zrar said the commission needs two weeks to approve the names of candidates. He called on all political parties to submit their lists by Wednesday.

After much debate about whether to alter the previous voter roll or compile a new one, the commission agreed in June to make a new one based on food ration cards and information from Iraq’s High Independent Electoral Commission.

Since July 11, eligible voters in the Kurdistan Region have been called upon to register to vote.
