PM Barzani, Jan Kubis agree new Iraqi cabinet should be formed quickly
Nechirvan Barzani, the prime minister of Kurdistan Regional Government, received the UNAMI head Jan Kubis on Tuesday to discuss speedy formation of a new cabinet for Baghdad.

“Both sides agreed that the Iraqi new cabinet should be formed in a speedy way and with the participation of all Iraqi parties and components,” stated KRG statement, adding that

Barzani and Kubis also stressed the need for the new cabinet to “have a concrete program for resolving all issues.”

The vote from Iraq's parliamentary election on May 12 is contested.

They called for “accelerating” the recounting so that the “concerns of parties are removed.”

Other regional issues were also discussed in the meeting.

"The discussions focued on the political and security developments in Iraq," read a UNAMI tweet.

Barzani is deputy head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) that won 25 seats in the election — the most in the Kurdistan Region.

Sixty MPs, many of whom did not succeed in the last election, are trying to garner 166 votes on Thursday to extend the parliament’s term.

Six months ago, the federal court ruled it was unconstitutional for the parliament to extend its term.

A Thursday meeting of the Iraqi parliament will determine the future of the parliament, and perhaps even the progress of government formation talks, which may drag on longer as a result.
