Rouhani says Iran will weather US sanctions
– Iran’s president issued a message of reassurance to the people that the country will weather new US sanctions a day after protests over the collapse of the rial.

"We assure people that they will not have any problem supplying their daily needs," said President Hassan Rouhani in an address to the country’s judiciary on Tuesday.

"We have no need for import of many basic goods,” he added.

Traders at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar staged a protest on Monday against high exchange rates and import restrictions.

Iran’s rial has lost about 50 percent of its value in the past six months.

Rouhani blamed a US plot.

"We are experiencing a situation of political and legal victory but the US wants to break our nation down with psychological and economic war," he said.

On May 9, US President Donald Trump withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, sending shockwaves through the Iranian economy.

On May 21, Mike Pompeo, US secretary of state, announced a list of 12 demands of Iran, promising “unprecedented sanctions” if the Islamic Republic does not stop its nuclear program and regional adventurism.

Multinationals have begun getting out of the country in anticipation of the sanctions, the first round of which will come into force on August 8.

Tehran announced this week a plan to ban imports of 1,339 “unnecessary” and “lucrative” items as the nation braces for the fresh sanctions.

Rouhani, who was the champion of the nuclear deal, accused the United States of trying to “break our nation’s trust and hope.
