Registration extended for alliances contesting KRG elections
Amid rumours of a possible alliance of opposition parties, the KRG’s electoral commission has extended the registration deadline for a second time.

The last day to register alliances is now June 27, commission member Ismael Khormali told Rudaw.

Registration for alliance was opened on June 18 and originally scheduled for three days, but was extended to June 23 after just one group completed the registration process.

The extension has been granted in order to give parties the opportunity to reach agreements to run together, Khormali explained.

There have been rumours and reports of possible alliances as parties review what happened in the May Iraqi elections and strategize for the KRG vote.

Thus far, 38 political parties and two alliances have registered to compete for the 111 seats up for grabs in the September 30 parliamentary election.

Two Kurdish Islamic parties, Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) and the Kurdistan Islamic Movement (IMK), announced on Monday that they will run together.

“We formed an alliance with the Islamic Movement for Kurdistan’s next parliamentary election and officially registered it as the ‘Reform Front’ with Kurdistan’s electoral commission,” Qassim Galaly, head of KIU’s election office, told Rudaw.

The first alliance to register is the Sardam (Modern) alliance of the Kurdistan Socialist Democratic Party, the Kurdistan Workers’ and Toilers’ Party, and the Nation Democratic Union of Kurdistan.

There are reports that Gorran, Komal, and the CDJ may also form an alliance to contest the elections.
