KRG, Iran Continue Prisoner Exchange
Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has called on people who have relative inmates in Iran to notify the government as Erbil and Tehran continue with their previous agreement to exchange prisoners.

Press secretary for KRG’s Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Hamza Baghdid, told BasNews on Sunday that KRG signed an agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran two years ago, through which the sides will exchange their inmates after their trial is concluded in the host country.

“The first phase started in 2015 when KRG handed 94 Iranian nationals prisoners and received five Kurdish nationals from Iran,” the official said.

For the next round, KRG will be sending back 19 Iranian prisoners but it is not concluded how many Kurdish inmates will be received. Therefore, the Kurdish authorities call on people to notify them if they have any relatives in Iranian prisons.

However, the prisoners, even after arriving back in their home country, will be obliged to serve the imprisonment period which the host country has given.

According to the KRG-Iran agreement, the prisoners will be black listed from entering the other country’s territory even after he is released.
