Missing Italian Giulio Regeni found dead in Cairo with ‘signs of torture’
Missing Italian student Giulio Regeni has been found dead in Cairo “with signs of torture,” according to a senior Egyptian prosecutor.

The Cambridge PhD student was discovered half naked by the roadside in the outskirts of the capital. Cigarette burns and other signs of torture suggesting a ‘slow death’ were evident on his body.

Security officials say the 28-year-old’s corpse has been taken to a Cairo morgue and an investigation has been opened.

The Egyptian ambassador has been summoned to Italy’s foreign ministry in Rome. It says it expects “maximum collaboration at all levels, in light of the exceptional gravity of what happened.”

Regeni disappeared on January 25, 2016 as he headed downtown to meet a friend. The date marked the fifth anniversary of the uprising which ended Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year rule.
