An Iraqi police official says a car bomb tore through a busy commercial street in Iraq's eastern Diyala province, killing at least 12 people.

The official says the bombing took place in the town of al-Khales Monday. At least 30 people were wounded in the attack.

Hospital officials confirmed the death tolls. Both officials spoke anonymously as they are not authorized to brief the media.

Earlier, at least 18 people were killed in car bombings in the capital, Baghdad, and near the southern city of Basra.

No one claimed responsibility for the attacks, although similar attacks have been carried out by the Islamic State group.
