Greece prepares for migrants crossing Maritsa river from Turkey
Several thousand migrants and refugees spend Friday (September 18) night in an open-air sports arena after another failed attempt to walk to Turkey’s land border with Greece.

Their progress towards the EU was halted by Turkish authorities because Greece has not offered to accept them.

“This passage is not possible,” Dursun Ali Sahin said in a live broadcast on CNN Turk.
“If there is any country that is formally inviting you, we would be happy to take you there ourselves with a vehicle or by plane. But that has not happened so far,” he added.

Hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees have made the perilous journey by boat to Greek islands off Turkey, but a spiralling death toll has seen more people head for its land border further north.

Turkey has been widely praised for welcoming 2 million Syrian refugees so far.

While an official welcome from Greece may not be forthcoming, Athens is preparing for a new wave of migrants crossing the Maritsa river that divides Greece from Turkey.
