Iraqi Kurdish presidency congratulates YPG on Tal Abyad liberation
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — The Kurdistan Regional Presidency issued a statement Monday congratulating the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) fighters for liberating the ethnically Kurdish Syrian town of Gire Spi (Tal Abyad) from ISIS.

“Thank you YPG fighters and other forces who took part in the liberation process for Gire Spi,” said the presidency in the statement.

“The liberation of Gire Spi from ISIS militants is great news for the people of Kurdistan and the free world. Such a victory is a major blow to the Islamic State's abilities,” the statement read.

“We highly appreciate the role of other forces along with YPG who cleared the town of ISIS,” the statement continued. “We hope for the recapture of the remaining areas from ISIS as soon as possible.”

On June 15 the YPG and Arab allies took full control of the border town of Gire Spi, driving ISIS militants out of the town and cutting off a vital supply line to ISIS’ self-proclaimed capital Raqqa.
