PM Barzani receives UN Secretary General Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict
Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (cabinet.gov.krd) - Kurdistan Region Prime Minister, Nechirvan Barzani, yesterday received the United Nation Secretary General Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Zainab Hawa Bangura.

Ms. Banguara talked about her visit to the camps where the displaced persons, who fled the violent repression of the Islamic State terrorist organization, ISIS, are accommodated in the Kurdistan Region. She said that she has been closely observing the situation of IDPs, particularly those Yazidi women who have been raped by ISIS fighters and suffered in their captivity. She expressed her support for all those organizations in the Kurdistan Region that assist those women to reintegrate into the society and which provide psychological support.

The UN representative hailed the Kurdistan Region’s governmental and none-governmental organizations that have promptly and efficiently assisted the victims of violence, emphasising that such cases have occurred in other parts in the world, but due to social and religious reasons, have been concealed.

Prime Minister Barzani thanked Ms. Bangura for her visit, urging UN agencies to continue their support for KRG’s assistance to the refugees and IDPs in order to further assist and ease their pains.

He expressed KRG’s readiness to provide the required assistance. He pointed out that the special units that have been established within Kurdistan Region Ministry of Interior, local administrations and agencies inside the camps, specifically to provide assistance to the victims of violence against women, have been further prepared to work with UN agencies and none-governmental organisations to help easing the difficulties of victims of terrorists.
