Members of Congress voice concern over strategy to fight ISIS
(SBG) With the Islamic State driving people from their homes in Ramadi and other parts of Iraq, lawmakers on Capitol Hill are urging President Obama to update the current policy to defeat and destroy the terrorist group.

In February, President Obama outlined the strategy which included a series of air strikes in Iraq and Syria targeting ISIS fighters. U.S. Central Command testified last month that the plan is working well.

"Since commencing our air operations in early August just seven months ago, we've killed more than 8,500 ISIL fighters," said Gen. Lloyd Austin III, Commander, of CENTCOM in testimony last month before the House Armed Services Committee.

But many in Congress are not convinced, and there's a new bipartisan movement in to try to get the strategy changed. It is being led by Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) and Rep. Steve Russell (R-OK).

Both are Veterans who served in Iraq and both are members of the House Armed Services Committee.

"A lot of times we just have this knee jerk reaction where we look to the military to solve all of our foreign policy problems and the reality is we need to have more diplomatic efforts," said Moulton.

Russell elaborated and said efforts should instead be focused on giving Sunni Muslims a voice in the Iraqi government, giving Kurds more autonomy and curbing the influence of Iranian backed Shiite Militias.

"We can achieve military objectives but we have to follow it up with these other efforts or we'll be right back," Russell said.
