Arrest made in Friday’s Ainkawa car bombing
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — The Kurdistan Security Council announced Monday that it had captured a person authorities believe responsible for carrying out Friday’s car bomb attack in front of the US Consulate in Ainkawa, a Christian neighborhood of Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan region.

“After a careful investigation, we have been able to identify a person who was the main executor of the attack. He was controlling a booby-trapped car, which was parked in front of the café, with a remote,” the statement read.

“Further details will be published once the investigations are completed,” the statement added.

A car bomb struck near the US Consulate in Erbil on Friday, killing two Kurdish civilians from Turkey and injuring eight others, including an American woman. Shortly after the deadly attack the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS, claimed responsibility for the attack.

The large explosion occurred at 5:40 pm, a busy time in the Christian neighborhood of Ainkawa popular with Westerners.
