Bomb attacks leave 10 people dead in Iraq
A spate of bomb attacks has claimed at least 10 lives around the Iraqi capital city of Baghdad, officials say.

According to police, the first attack occurred on Saturday morning when a bomb detonated near a market in the Shia district of the town of Mahmoudiya, 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of the capital. Five people were killed and 12 wounded in the bombing.

Later in the day, another assault in Baghdad’s northeastern suburb of Husseiniyah, left two people dead and nine others injured.

Police officials added that in eastern Baghdad a bomb explosion near food stalls serving Shia pilgrims killed three people and wounded eight.

The pilgrims were going to the Shia holy city of Karbala to hold mourning rituals on Arbaeen, which marks the 40th day after the anniversary of martyrdom of Imam Hussein (PBUH), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the third Shia imam.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombings. However, Iraqi officials usually blame such attacks on the ISIL Takfiri terrorists.

On December 4, at least 40 people were killed and scores more injured in separate bomb attacks across Iraq.

ISIL launched an offensive in Iraq in June and took control of the country’s second largest city, Mosul, before sweeping through parts of the country’s Sunni Arab heartland.

The extremist group has threatened all communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds and Christians, during its advances in the violence-torn Arab state.

According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), a total of 1,232 Iraqis lost their lives in November, while 2,434 others were injured.
