Dohuk is home to Iraq’s largest refugee camp, Domiz, which shelters 60,000 Syrians. The camp has been full since the beginning of the year, and in recent months five more camps have opened in the region to deal with the influx of refugees.
With the camps already overcrowded, many Iraqis who have fled their homes to escape the Islamic State (IS) group, also known as ISIS or ISIL, have sought refuge elsewhere in Dohuk’s regional capital. A total of 138,000 people have taken shelter in the city’s local schools.
