One of the prominent buildings of Erbil, Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) capital is Jalil Hiyat mosque which was built 17 years ago nevertheless has received considerable attention as if it is historical.

During Ramadan, the mosque experiences its most crowded days. Since the construction of the mosque was financed by a businessman named Jalil Hiyat whose surname means ‘tailor’ in Arabic, the mosque is called with his name.

The glorious building attracts people in Erbil especially in Ramadans. The architectural elegance of the mosque is very much inspired by Ottoman style as indicated in design of windows and doors. The construction lasted 10 years and the founder Hiyat died before it completed. Many construction products were exported from Turkey. One of the distinguished characteristics of the mosque is the aqua regia used to distemper glazed wood carvings. Moreover, the face side of the building is decorated with crafted ceramics. The mosque which takes 15 thousand square meter space, has two minarets and two gates. The little domes garnished by colorful stones over the main gate is also another typical characteristic of the mosque. Having 12 doors, Jalil Hiyat mosque provides 2500 Muslim the chance of praying at the same time.

One of them, an Erbil resident Jalil said "You know Terawih is a sunna in Ramadan. Literally, it means relaxing which is true for body and spirit. Ramadan is for us, the month of patience and peace. We ask Allah to bestow our country peace and stbility."

Not only people in Erbil, but also Iraqi citizens who were forced to move to the northern part of the country where autonomous Kurdish authority rules, have enjoyed the relative peacful environment. Some Iraqis come to Erbil only for avoiding violence during Ramadan. And they all pray for peace.
