Idris Barzani's speech at One Young World summit
I am passionate about

Creating an environment in which members of our society have the opportunity to reach their potential. I believe strongly in education, above all else, because it provides tools to individuals that they can utilize for their entire lives. I refer both to formal education and experience, both of which are essential for the future of our generation. I do not believe that charitable giving, in itself, can be successful if we do not pay attention both to the particular needs of the less fortunate and to the promotion of systematic methods that assure sustainable, long-term change rather than a culture of dependency. For this reason I believe very strongly in the importance of creating an atmosphere which promotes accountability, creativity, and initiative. I am grateful to my father for demonstrating to me the effects and the importance of an open economic and social system and the extent to which it can promote individual achievement and growth. I believe in doing my small part to provide those in need with opportunities and the necessary tools to capitalize upon them. I think charitable giving, if accompanied with a wise long-term plan, can be of great importance.

Actions

I am proud to have created Rwanga, a charity organization, with the assistance of a number of skilled and experienced colleagues. We are currently rolling out a number of very exciting projects – all designed to provide individuals with a better chance to succeed. We have found that many schools in our Region suffer because teachers cannot find childcare for their own children during school hours. Rwanga has therefore embarked on a program to create nursery rooms for the children of teachers in 10 schools as a pilot project. We hope this will improve elementary level education. If the results are positive, we hope to expand this program to many more schools. The Kurdistan Region of Iraq currently hosts an enormous number of refugees due to the conflict in Syria, and Rwanga is busy establishing pre-fabricated classrooms and schools for kindergarten students. Rwanga is also offering a pilot course for 300 high school girls focusing on women’s empowerment. It has been recognized that gender-balanced participation in society pays enormous dividends. These are some of the projects I have worked on with my colleagues, and I am optimistic that we will be able to play a small but important role in the development of our society in Kurdistan. Rwanga is a new organization, and we are working hard to identify actions that will provide the greatest ‘bang for the buck’ to those most in need. I believe we have made an excellent start, and I am most grateful to each and every member of our organization for his or her hard work and dedication in this regard.
