Turkmens Insist on Forming Security Force in Kirkuk
“Forming this force is not lawful. It will target Kurds, Arabs and even Turkmens. If Turkmens form their own security force, it is very likely for Kurds and Arabs ask for their own security forces in future. In this situation the governmental force and army will lose their legitimacy” Ahmad Askari, a member of Kirkuk Provincial Council told Peyamner News Agency.
“Forming new security force will lead to the collapse of Army and governmental force. It will transform the constitutional government to a militant government” he added.
Kirkuk lies in a wide zone with an enormously diverse population, which has moreover experienced dramatic demographic changes in the course of the twentieth century. The city has been multilingual for centuries, and the development of distinct ethnic groups was a process that took place over the course of Kirkuk's urbanization in the twentieth century. Kurds, Turkmen and Arabs lay conflicting claims to this zone, and all have their historical accounts and memories to buttress their claims.
The province is subject to frequent armed attacks, robberies, abductions and bombings.
