New 200MW power plant launched in Misan
The Ministry of Electricity announced today that it has launched a new power plant in Misan province which will inject 200 megawatts into the national grid.
Electricity Minister Kareem al-Aftan launched the diesel power plant, north of Amara, center of Misan, said Mosaab al-Modarres, ministry spokesperson.

The South Korean STX Company completed the project, worth of $220m.

Modarres said 50% of the outstanding dues of the company will be paid two years after launching the project, according to the initial agreement.

The South Korean company has also undertaken to supervise the operation and maintenance of the plant for one complete year after its launch and train Iraqi employees to run the plant.

The scorching heat of summer in Iraq, where sometimes the temperature reaches the half boiling degree, seems unbearable. Power shortage makes the tolerance almost impossible.

The power shortage now amounts to 18 hours daily. The sporadic power cuts and unstable schedule for electricity provision led to violent public protests last year.

Despite the huge funds allocated to improving electricity sector, Iraq is not able to provide its demand of 15,000 MWs, but only 7,000 MWs.
