Sir Kenneth Branagh is to make his New York stage debut in a production of Macbeth performed at an army facility.

The play was previously staged in a deconsecrated church at the Manchester International Festival in July and co-starred Alex Kingston as Lady Macbeth.

The US show will take place in the 55,000 sq ft (5,100 sq m) drill hall at the Park Avenue Armory in June.

Sir Kenneth said: "I am delighted that we have the chance to recreate Macbeth in this epic setting."

The actor, who also directed Shakespeare's dark tale of a Scottish king corrupted by his thirst for power, was roundly praised for the play - his first time playing the central role.

The Guardian called it "an exciting production that shows why Branagh is such a fine Shakespearean actor".

The Telegraph added: "This is a Macbeth, though, that won't just go down as a highlight of the Manchester International Festival but as one of the Scottish Play's great revivals."

Alex Poots, artistic director of both the Manchester International Festival and the restored Armory said: "We are thrilled that Kenneth Branagh will be coming to the Armory to recreate this iconic role following his performance in Manchester this summer.

"And I am particularly excited that this production will mark his New York stage debut."
