Algerian Singer and Icon Warda Al-Jazairia has Died at Age 73
Al Arabiya reported that her son Riyad Qasry confirmed the news of her death, and that according to the instructions of Algerian President Abelaziz Bouteflika, her body will be flown to Algeria for burial.
Warda Al Jazairia’s real name was Warda Fatouki, she was born in France in 1939 to an Algerian father and Lebanese mother. Warda began singing professionally at the age of 11, and throughout the Algerian independence movement she was known for singing patriotic Algerian songs.
One of her most famous songs was “Harramt ahebbak” or “It’s forbidden for me to love you.”
Warda married Egyptian composer Baligh Hamdi and moved to Cairo where she performed with many star Arab musicians.
In addition to being an accomplished singer, she also stared in several famous movies as an actress.
