MEPS24 Forum Discusses Pathways to Peace and Prosperity in the Middle East

The second session of the Middle East Peace and Security (MEPS24) Forum, titled "Pathways to Peace: De-Escalation, Collective Security & Economic Integration," brought together regional and international experts to explore strategies for advancing stability and prosperity in the Middle East.

Strengthening Economic Relations and Diversification

U.S. Consul General in Erbil, Mr. Steven Bitner, underscored the evolving U.S.-Iraq relationship, which has traditionally focused on security. He emphasized the growing importance of economic ties with the Kurdistan Region, advocating for stronger partnerships to support regional stability.

“It is critical for the Kurdistan Region to build economic relations,” Bitner remarked, stressing the role of economic integration in fostering development.

Dr. Ali Sindi from the American University of Kurdistan highlighted Iraq’s heavy reliance on oil, which accounts for 90% of its GDP. He urged diversification to achieve sustainable growth and reduce dependency on a single sector.

Regional Security and Collective Political Efforts

Ambassador Jon Wilks, former UK envoy to Iraq, Qatar, and Oman, reflected on Iraq’s journey toward stabilization over the past decade and a half. He called for regional leaders to prioritize collective security and adopt political solutions to address persistent crises.

“You need to be very careful if you want to build something new in the region,” Wilks cautioned, advocating for strategic planning and collaboration.

Dr. Kristin Diwan of the Arab Gulf States Institute pointed to positive developments, including indications of Iran’s willingness to participate in diplomatic negotiations, signaling potential for progress in resolving regional tensions.

Domestic Challenges in Iran

Ms. Holly Dagres, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, provided a critical perspective on Iran’s internal challenges, highlighting growing public discontent.

“Iranians are fed up with the regime. They reject it and want a normal life,” Dagres stated, emphasizing the growing demands for reform and change among Iran’s population.

Pathways to Peace

The session concluded with a unified call for integrating economic initiatives with de-escalation strategies to create lasting peace in the Middle East.

By addressing interconnected security and economic challenges, participants expressed optimism for a more stable and prosperous region, with increased cooperation as a cornerstone for future progress.
