Shiite Militia Group Claims Responsibility for Drone Attacks on Golan Heights
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a Shiite militia group, has claimed responsibility for a series of drone attacks on three sites in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Sunday night. In a statement released by the group, they described the attacks as an act of “solidarity with the people of Palestine and Lebanon” and vowed to continue targeting what they referred to as “the enemy’s strongholds.”
The group did not specify the locations of the targeted sites nor did they report any casualties resulting from the attacks.
These strikes come amid heightened tensions following the escalation of the Israeli-Hamas conflict in Gaza, which began on October 7 last year. Since the conflict's intensification, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq has launched multiple attacks against both Israeli and US targets in the region as a show of support for Palestinians in Gaza.
The latest attacks on Israel follow an increase in Israeli strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon, further escalating regional hostilities. Earlier this week, two Israeli soldiers were killed in a drone attack on the Golan Heights, reportedly launched from Iraq. In response, Israeli media suggested that the Israeli army is preparing to retaliate against militia groups based in Iraq involved in the ongoing attacks.
As the conflict in Gaza and surrounding areas continues, cross-border violence has intensified, raising concerns of broader regional implications.
