Iraq's Electoral Commission Establishes Committees to Oversee Kurdistan Elections

The Independent High Electoral Commission of Iraq has announced the establishment of three committees tasked with overseeing the electoral districts in the Kurdistan Region. This move comes in preparation for the upcoming Kurdistan Parliament elections, scheduled for October 20.

In a statement released on Friday, the commission outlined the responsibilities of these committees, which include conducting monthly field visits to electoral offices and engaging with both administrations and staff to assess their needs. The committees are also charged with performing technical and administrative evaluations of the electoral offices' operations and reporting their findings to the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners.

Each committee is responsible for implementing recommendations and proposals aimed at enhancing the performance of provincial electoral offices. The commission has stressed the importance of these evaluations in ensuring the efficient operation of the electoral process.

The three-member committees are assigned to specific regions: the first will operate in the provinces of Sulaymaniyah and Halabja, the second in Erbil, and the third will oversee the electoral district in Dohuk. The Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, Omar Ahmed Mohammed, has been appointed as the general supervisor for all three committees.

This announcement follows a regional decree signed on June 26 by the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, officially setting the date for the Kurdistan Parliament elections. The formation of these committees is seen as a crucial step in ensuring the transparency and integrity of the upcoming electoral process.
