Kurdistan Regional Government Advances Water Infrastructure with New Dams and Reservoirs

In an effort to bolster water resources and address the challenges posed by drought and climate change, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has announced significant progress in the construction of dams and reservoirs. The KRG's ninth cabinet has focused on these projects, with the completion of four dams and 13 more currently under construction, at a combined cost exceeding 553 billion Iraqi dinars (IQD).

The KRG's Department of Media and Information revealed in a recent statement that the government's objective is not just to enhance water availability but to diversify its revenue streams. To achieve this, newly constructed dams, such as Bawanur and Mandawa, are being equipped with electricity-generating hydropower plants, aligning with the growing power demand in the region.

Additionally, these dams have been strategically designed to support multiple sectors, including tourism, farming, and agriculture. The potential for generating electricity from these hydropower plants aims to alleviate power shortages and foster economic growth in Kurdistan.

A significant portion of the Kurdistan Region's water resources currently comes from dams, lakes, and rivers, including Dukan Lake, Darbandikhan Lake, and the Qandil River. By increasing the number of dams and reservoirs, the KRG intends to enhance water storage, particularly to support agriculture. This initiative aligns with the government's vision to stimulate growth in the tourism sector while responding to the pressing challenges of climate change and drought.

The Kurdistan Regional Government's commitment to improving water infrastructure is a crucial step in the region's ongoing development and resilience against environmental challenges. As these projects progress, they are expected to have a positive impact on various sectors, contributing to the continued growth and prosperity of Kurdistan.
