Kurdistan Region President calls for justice on 35th anniversary of Anfal campaign
The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, has issued a statement on the 35th anniversary of the Anfal campaign, in which over 182,000 people were killed by the former Iraqi Ba’ath regime.
Barzani paid tribute to the victims and their families and called for justice, urging the Iraqi government to reimburse the families of the victims and enforce the decision of the Iraqi High Tribunal, which recognized Anfal as genocide, war crime and crime against humanity.
Barzani also emphasized the need for better services to be provided to the survivors of Anfal in the Kurdistan Region, highlighting that the constitutional status of the Kurdistan Region is the outcome of the struggle of hundreds of thousands of fallen heroes. He emphasized the importance of giving Anfal greater international recognition and preventing such crimes from being repeated anywhere in the world.
The Anfal campaign, which took place in 1988, involved the systematic killing of Kurdish civilians and destruction of their homes and communities. Barzani's statement serves as a reminder of the atrocities committed during this period and the ongoing need for justice and recognition for the victims and their families.
