Kurdistan Democratic Party Bloc Releases Statement on New Law for Provincial Council and Parliament Elections

Late on Monday, the Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP) bloc in the Iraqi parliament announced its approval of a law on the elections of provincial councils and parliament. The law aims to guarantee the rights of voters in the Kurdistan region, Kirkuk, and all Kurdish regions outside the administration of the Kurdistan region, as well as all regions of Iraq.

The law sets the general census of 1957 as the basis for the next elections in Kirkuk, which ensures the rights of voters in areas that were separated from Kirkuk due to the policy of demographic change. The law also resolves the issue of distributing positions in Kirkuk on the basis of equality of 32%. This will allow all families displaced from Kirkuk due to the Arabization policy to vote again according to Article 140.

The statement from the KDP bloc also mentioned the cancellation of Article 35 of Law No. 12 of 2018 and Article 12 of Law No. 14 of 2019, which prevented the holding of elections in Kirkuk. Finally, after strenuous efforts, the voting of refugees from Kirkuk and Sinjar to their cities has been guaranteed, and representatives of the Kurdish Christians have been ensured in the parliament.

This law is expected to have a significant impact on the political landscape of the region, as it ensures the rights of voters in the region and resolves long-standing issues related to the distribution of positions and voting rights. The KDP bloc hopes that this law will help to promote stability and democracy in the region, and foster greater cooperation between the various communities that call the region home.
