ERBIL — The president of Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and former president of Kurdistan Region, Masoud Barzani, has highlighted the role of women in the decades-long struggle for freedom, saying they are key factors to social progress.

Barzani’s remarks were made in a statement issued to mark the 66th anniversary of Kurdistan Women Union.

“In addition to its crucial role in advocating women’s rights, the Kurdistan Women Union has a glorious history in Kurdistan’s struggle for freedom before and after the [1991] uprising,” Barzani wrote in a statement.

“Their impact could be seen in the victories achieved by the Peshmerga forces of Kurdistan.”
