ERBIL — Today, 13 November, marks the third anniversary of the liberation of Sinjar from the Islamic State (IS).

The massive operation with thousands of Kurdish forces was led by the Kurdistan Peshmerga forces and backed by the US-led Coalition. It marked a decisive victory by removing the IS jihadists from Sinjar, and regaining control of Highway 47, a main supply route used by IS.

"I am here to announce the liberation of Sinjar,” Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani said in a press conference on the forefront of the battle. He was personally commanding the operation.

Though the city was already destroyed by IS, the liberation of Sinjar came as a major victory for the Kurds. It later helped the liberation of IS stronghold of Mosul.
