ERBIL - Chancellor of Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) received on Sunday the Russian ambassador to Iraq, Maksim Maksimov, to discuss the issues of the politics and security in Iraq and the region.

During the meeting, the pair shed light on the latest developments in the process of forming a new government in Iraq and the mechanism of resolving the remaining disputes between Erbil and Baghdad, Barzani's press office said in a statement.

The Kurdish top security official described the newly appointed prime minister of Iraq, Adil Abdul-Mahdi's role in establishing the new cabinet as a positive move, hoping that the remaining structure of the government will be formed soon, the statement added.

The Kurdish leader, according to the press release, highlighted the re-emergence of the Islamic State (IS) in the disputed Kurdish areas.

They also talked about the historic ties between Erbil and Moscow, where the Russian top diplomat underlined the importance of the Kurdistan Region in the Middle East.
